Here I wanted to bring the free-form shapes in the foreground into direct relationship with the structured verticals and colors in the background. The interplay of the two different styles interested me the most — just as the brush felt right going in one direction, the composition called for something new and abrupt. Painting these reminded me that we’re never really in control of our path ahead. Where we place our focus, what holds our imagination, and how we handle change, are as important as where we’re going.
